A trike is great if you plan to transport more than 2 kids and stop frequently, perfect for kinder and school runs, easy to take on trains, park outside shops. You can jump on and off very easily. You can ride at a walking pace, perfect when the kids want to use their own scooter or bike, or when you ride on the footpath and pedestrian streets. You can go fast too, no problems at all, that is just to step on those pedals.
The christiania cargobike is extremely easy to ride, it turns on a dime and with the aluminium frame it is very light(31kg), the riding position almost straight over the pedals makes it an effortless ride and the big front wheels allow you to go a bit off-road in the park and feel safe on uneven footpaths. The camper of the wheels means it will not feel much different having a few passengers in the box on a straight road, compared to not having any, the pivot where the back frame is attached to the front box is on an angle, so the christiania bike actually follows the riders normal leaning when turning a corner. The best way to fully see the difference this makes is to come by and test one.
The front brakes are mechanical disc brakes with a parking brake in the lever. The back brake can be either a coaster (foot) brake or roller brake. Coaster brakes allows you to brake the bike and have both hands free at a red light or when stopped. Roller brake allows you to be able to position the pedals in the right position at any time. One is not better than the other, it just depends on personal preference.
The hoods are made for Danish weather; they are 100% water and snow proof, and the different styles will fit most family configurations. The Prairie is great if you need to transport more than 3 kids or have babyseats fitted in the box, (the middle frame is perfect to hang toys from). The Bugatti is best if you mainly transport 2 kids, it is higher in the back so leave more room for tall kids with helmets. Hoods come in cream, blue, red, black or clear panorama.
The frame is anodised matt black, and comes in 3 sizes, the box comes in green, red, pale blue, crème, yellow and gloss black.
As with any christiania bike it can easily be altered to suit any wish you have; high or low gearing, coaster or roller brake, hydraulic or mechanical disc brakes, steel or aluminium frame, size 17” to 21”, short, long or extra long box, customised box, hood or branding. Anything can be done to make it uniquely yours.
A motorised version of the bike is also available. The electrical motor is a pedal assisted hub motor in the back wheel, designed specially for cargobikes; strong but not fast, max speed is 20 km/h. For added safety the motorized bikes are fitted with hydraulic disc brakes front and back.
