The Christianiabike came about in the 80’s when Lars,
who had been making the Christianiabike trailers for
a few years, decided to make his wife Annie a bike for
her birthday. They lived in Christiania, a car and care-free commune in Copenhagen, so a bike like this would
be perfect to transport their kids and everything else safely around. Annie was a bit disappointed, she wanted
a mountain bike, She soon realized how fantastic the transporter trike is. As did everyone else who saw it.

Soon everyone wanted a bike like Annies and so they started to slowly set up a small production.

Since then the Christianiabike has become a symbol of Denmark, and the Danish bike culture, and is being used by everyone, from kindergartens, The Royal Danish Postal Services to Carlsberg and Lego. There are more than 10.000 Christianiabikes alone in Copenhagen and 3.5 out of 5 transporter bikes sold in Denmark are a Christianiabike.

Since May 2006 psbikes have sold the bikes in Australia and over 300 families now have a Christianiabike, from families in Broome to Tasmania, Port Douglas to Alberny, we have delivered bikes to cattle stations 150 km out side Longreach, so the they did not need to use the car visiting the neighbors 7 km away, to a truck driver in Port Hedland that just did not want to sit in a car when he got home from work and wanted to take his wife and kid somewhere.

For many families it has become their car and primary mode of transport.

In October 2009 we introduced the Christiania 2Wheeler, also know as Christianiabike2 as everyone in Denmark said “Is that a Christiania with 2 wheels?” when they first saw it..

The design is based on the LongJohn and the BakFiets, but we use an aluminium frame that make the bike a lot lighter, and with the upright riding position you loose less energy riding and that gives you a bike very fast and easy to manouvere.

It also have the versatile Christiania timber box, making it easy to fit seating to your exact needs and change it later as your needs change too. The timber also makes it very safe and easy to repair.

The Model S/box, specially designed and made to transport wheel-chairs, are also slowly becoming known as they enable families with kids in wheel chairs to enjoy a bike ride in the park, to the beach or just avoiding the difficulties it is to find a car park with enough room to get the chair in and out. And the kids love it, sitting in the front being able to look around and say hello to people.

Over 20 different businesses are using Christianiabikes as part of their business, since March 2007, Tiffin’s in Melbourne have had a fleet of bikes they deliver between 300 and 500 meals a day to Melbourne CBD on.

Every day their bikes are loaded with up to 100 kg of food and then ridden between 30 and 50 km delivering and picking up the Tiffin’s, up and down sidewalks, tram tracks, steep hills, they even sometime ride straight into the elevator and deliver the food at the correct floor.

Beside a flat tire and a stretched cable here and there the bikes just go and go, and have not needed anything else but a few adjustments and minor services.

Christianiabikes are being used for everything from selling and delivering flowers, food, ice-cream, mineral water, sustainable beer, food for the animals in national parks, rock sample collecting by mining companies in SA and by bakers, gardeners, sign-writers and dog walkers, window cleaners all over Australia.
We have even fitted a complete wok-kitchen on a box.

It is also slowly becoming the preferred mode of transport for Santa Claus, as he can ride straight into schools, kindergarten’s and hospitals.. And his little helper don’t need a drivers
(or sleigh-) licence to get him there…

All Christianiabikes are covered by Australian warranty, and are fitted with well known brands and sizes, so are easily fixed by any good bike mechanic.
